Emily Ryan Themes in Lit 2020 William Bradford 09/10/2007 1. In his wildest moments, William Bradford never imagined you sitting down to read his text. Bradford’s intended audience was probably very limited; for whom did he originally write? With what purpose does he write? He intended it for those who were literate at the time. This was probably a very small number when he was writing this text. He wrote to tell a story of survival, hardships, and success in their voyage through the new land. His emphasis was really that God was the one who helped them. His dedication to freedom of religion was the thing that prompted him to go on the voyage in the first place, so it makes sense that religion would be his focus for this text. 2.
