ATROPHY OF SKELETAL SOURCES 2 Atrophy of Skeletal Muscles Atrophy of skeletal muscles can be termed as occurring change in an adult’s muscles due to disuse practices, disease, and aging. A particular disease in this context is cachexia which is wasting of the body and is brought about by severe chronic illnesses. Why Do Bed-confined patients have Muscle Atrophy Patients require bed rest. However, extended periods of bed rest has been recently found to cause harm to other organs in the body (Nigam, Knight, and Jones, 2009). The musculoskeletal system suffers the most as the bones weaken and muscles lose strength. This process in bones is called disuse osteoporosis. Immobility can hence be termed as the primary cause why bed-confined patients develop muscle atrophy. Why Minimize Atrophy Rather Than Arrest It is not possible to arrest muscle atrophy as there are muscles almost everywhere in the body (Funnell, Koutoukidis, and Lawrence, 2008).
