Managing stress and anxiety Many of us feel ‘stressed out’ at various times – and whether you are starting first year, trying to get through Honours or juggling a postgraduate degree, studying at University can be an added source of stress. ‘Good stress’ can be used to your advantage – by helping you feel alert and prepared. The key is to manage stress levels rather than try to eliminate them. Performance can be enhanced by regulating your stress levels which takes CONSCIOUS EFFORT! Strategies for managing ongoing stress Embrace imperfection! have realistic expectations of yourself and others Talk to someone – partner, friends, family, supervisor, counsellor Find a balance – look after your health, take regular breaks, eat a balanced diet and find a hobby Relaaaax….. Deep breathing is a simple and effective way to relax quickly. Breathe in slowly through your nose Draw the breath all the way down to your abdomen
