EP M3D1 1. I have seen and use operant conditioning in every classroom! Most people enjoy positive feedback and consider verbal recognition, attention, and spotlights in from of their peer group to be positive. Most people seek out these types of interactions from the people they consider important. Most teachers want attentive behavior and participation and the lack of disruption in their classrooms, as those behaviors support them the best in achieving their learning objectives. By virtue of the fact that teachers have special authority in a classroom, and therefore they have special ability to give out these desired pieces of attention and praise, simply put, the teacher can effectively "trade" the reward of their attention to students who perform with the behaviors that the teacher wants. Personally, I believe this strategy can be employed under any and all circumstances, but I will illustrate with an example. For two years I ran an after- school program at a Montessori school for a 6-9 year old group. Each afternoon, we launched our after-care session with a brief time sitting in a circle.
