MBAA 604 March 15, 2016 Chiquita Sticks Its Bananas Out 1. Chiquita chose to be proactive in corporate social responsibility efforts in part to improve its public image. In its earlier years, Chiquita “was better known as an aggressive and exploitative multinational” towards its Central American suppliers. (Peng p. 89) To counteract these negative images, Chiquita adopted the Social Accountability 8000 labor rights standard, worked with the Rainforest Alliance, integrated a value and ethics system, and remained honest in the face of questioning from the Department of Justice. (Peng p. 90) The overarching goal was not just to give the image of being an ethical company, but to actually act honorably and ethically throughout the organization’s global footprint. 2. However rosy Chiquita’s intensions, however, the company was unable to change the way other companies do business. I believe that the main reason was because Chiquita focused on its own actions, and failed to highlight the costs and detriments of doing business the unethical way. Also, in general consumers are less apt to spend more money
