11/27/2007 Bio 150LG Sharmila Kopanathi Critical Assignment #2 Stem Cells: Creating cures or problems? Stem cell research is a highly controversial issue. The cells have great regenerative potential in medicine, such as the ability to cure degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and many others. However, some people feel that the power of stem cells is too great and that the ability to create and preserve life is reserved for our creator. The opponents of stem cell research consider it to be a “slippery slope”, and once we go down that road it will be difficult to regulate. Embryonic stem cells are at the center of the controversy mainly because they come from embryos, which some people consider to be as sacred as a human life. Extracting stem cells from an embryo is considered by the United States Federal Government as tampering with natural life, and unethical.
