Physical intimidation Lynching was not always a discrete event it was common. Economic intimidation B/c their economic welfare relied on big land owners, extremely effective By election of 1876 states were controlled by southern democrats. Compromise of 1877 - end of reconstruction progress Northerners begin to lose interest, they shouldn’t be so involved Reb. Party was interested in how many people were going to vote for them. Huge Depression hits north in 1873, Panic of 1873, Eco boom of civil war is over Issue of election is corruption both say they are going to bring reform Reb candidate – Rutherford B Hayes Dem candidate – Sameul J. Tilden 1 st action gives all 19 votes to Rutherford becomes pres. 1 appoint 1 southern democrat to cabinet 2 gov will give low interest loans to build southern industries 3 as pres he will remove all federal troops from south, nothing left to protect African Americans North says that they failed in remaking the south, south feels that they were victimized,
