Balancing Ecosystems June 13, 2016 Glimmerville City Council 1234 Main Street Glimmerville, CA 92404 Dear Glimmerville City Council: My name is Heather Ketring and I am writing to you on behalf of the Sparksville City Council. It has come to my attention that the city of Glimmerville is currently facing the same issues as the city of Sparksville involving the invasive Grass Carp population. The issue was not only an ecological concern but also posed economic ramifications for our city. The Grass Carp population severely impacted our bass population and we were unable to host Sparksville’s annual bass fishing tournament which brings in sizeable dividends for the city thus leaving the city bankrupt of resources that stimulate the economy. Your city is now faced with the dilemma of restoring ecological balance to the city’s aquatic ecosystem. A balanced ecosystem is when natural animals, plants, organisms, and non-living organisms exist in harmony; however, the Grass Carp negatively impacted the ecosystem in Sparksville causing an imbalance. The Grass Carp was introduced to our local waters to address the issue of an overabundance of indigenous plant life caused by fertilizer deposits from local farms. The overgrowth was making it difficult for our native species to thrive as the ecosystem was not resilient enough to overcome and adapt to the changes. The Grass Carp are considered to be an invasive species as they are non-native to the lake. This species is native to Asia which means it has no natural predators in North America. In addition, the Grass Carp reproduce at a phenomenal rate, have a lengthy life expectancy, and grow to be quite large thus making them a difficult species to contend with. Their numbers increased so
