PSY 120/120H—Carol Donnelly SCHIZOPHRENIA **Schizophrenia means ‘split mind’: the split is from reality * The defining & prominent feature of the psychotic disorders is the presence of one or more of the following psychotic symptoms: delusions hallucinations, disorganized speech or thought disorganized or catatonic behavior Schizophrenia involves a continuous disturbance of 6 months or more that includes at least 1 month of 2 or more of the following active-phase symptoms: 1.Delusions : Common delusions: thoughts, feelings, are being controlled private thoughts are being broadcasted, thoughts are being inserted, thoughts robbed by external forces ‘TV, pillow, giving secret messages to me’ ‘My organs have been removed’ Former patient said “What happened to me was a breakdown in the filter, and a hodge podge of unrelated stimuli were distracting me from things which should have had my undivided attention”… 2. Hallucinations : most common hallucinations:
