Sam Houston was pro for Texas’ annexation to the United States, though strongly opposed secession from the Union. Houston refused to take the oath of loyalty to the Confederate States of America, thus removed as the governor of Texas, and replaced with Edward Clark. I feel that Houston opposed secession because he passionately understood the importance of the United States staying unified. Sam Houston understood the bloodshed and horror of war. He fought for Texas’ independence from Mexico. With his experience of war, he knew that seceding from the Union would bring bloodshed to his beloved state, Texas. He reiterated the importance of keeping the constitution intact and fighting to preserve the constitution.
