Reality TV Reality TV is something that is common knowledge today. We don’t event think twice when we see people eating bugs, jumping off a cliff or being “eliminated” for our (the viewer’s) entertainment. The reality TV genre has existed in some form or another since the early years of television, but the current explosion of popularity dates from around 2000 with shows like Survivor and Big Brother. However the first “real” reality TV program began with “The Real World” in 1993. Reality TV in and of itself is meant to give us the viewer a window into the lives of normal people. Conclusion All in all I would not encourage people to watch this show if they are at all trying to get an idea of the “real” world. If maybe purely for a laugh at how dumb these seven people can be I would say watch it with a careful eye. The producers have molded the show to get better ratings, and to get better ratings they needed to cause drama and show sex. Sex sells right? I feel like “The Real World” has become something of a laughing stock. We see more and more parodies of the show and jokes are constantly being made, yet people still watch. What does that say about us the viewer? Would we not watch if there wasn’t constantly someone getting drunk? I think that we would. I don’t think reality TV needs to be a spectacle of how idiotic we can get our fellow humans to act by throwing money at them. I believe that “The Real World” is demeaning to our cultural values. It belittles us as young adults. I think that it’s not the casts fault for acting the way they do. It’s because big shot producers and directors put them in a situation that leads to problems. Lastly I think that if the producers don’t make a huge step back towards at least the earlier seasons, the show should be pulled. They had a good idea and they just lost it along the way. “The Real World” could be a good show and it has a lot of potential, but right now it’s not that far off from pornography. Something needs to give.

Problems Though some things that come out of the Real World house are positive, I would say that in the last half of the seasons, there has been more bad than good. MTV has received many criticisms based on the shows morals, motives
