Michael Ginder Professor Buttigieg Honors Humanities Seminar 11 February 2008 Oscar Wilde’s A Picture of Dorian Gray Characters Dorian Gray – A wealthy young man, Dorian is a shallow and impressionable man who becomes very selfish and is consumed by an effort to experience all parts of life. Basil Hallward – An artist who paints a portrait of Dorian, he is enraptured by Dorian’s elegance and beauty. His painting of Dorian is his masterpiece. He comes to love Dorian as a person, not just as his subject. He is also an idealist; he seeks harmony of body and soul, which is why he is deluded by Dorian’s beauty. Lord Henry Wotton - A rich nobleman and a hedonist, he is motivated by a desire to have pleasurable experiences, many of them immoral, and passes this on to Dorian. Sibyl Vane – An actress who falls in love with Dorian, their relationship makes her realize the superficiality of acting and affects her acting performance. “I might mimic a passion that I do not feel but I cannot mimic one that burns in me like fire.”
