Caitlin Macaluso Media Representation of body shape and size In general, women are more of an object in magazine ads, newspapers and comic strips where as men are more central and portrayed as more important. The majority of the magazine ads I found with women in them showed women who were very skinny and good looking. They were wearing nice clothing and less clothing than the men. In the ads with women, the facism/bodyism score was less than the ads with men. In a few, the women weren’t looking at the camera and if they were there were shadows across their faces and their bodies were more accentuated. In one ad that I found that had both men and women in it, the men were physically restraining the woman and the men outnumbered the women. In comic strips that I found, the women were in the background and not a part of

The meaning of body size One easy way to conduct research on peoples interpretations of body size is to survey a group of people. I asked a few friends whether they felt that we make judgments of people according to their body size and generally the answer was yes. Whether we intend to or not, people see obesity as a sign of laziness and failure which is partly due to media representation of body size and the fact that those ideas have surrounded us since a very young age.
