HUM LECTURE COMPILATION Hum Lecture (1/9/2006)- An Outline of the Bible’s Historical Books to the Time of Nehemiah *leaders in the Bible (time): patriarchs   judges   prophets  I. Period of the Patriarchs: c. 1800-1700 B.C. (Genesis) Patriarchal : community composed of an extended kin group   patriarch refers to head of family,  usu. the father (time of Abraham, his son Jacob, and his son Isaac)  o Jacob’s sons were progenitors of the twelve Israeli tribes Land of Canaan: o “Canaanite” : multiplicity of peoples; distantly related to Abraham’s people; mostly  polytheistic o Semi-nomads : remain in one region, do not own land, do not produce agriculture (on  contrary, trade and flocks) Abraham’s Covenant o Abraham made a covenant with God that Abraham and his family would worship the God,  and in return, that God would watch over Abraham and his family; also his descendants   Abraham’s descendants would spread over the land II. Egypt, the Exodus, and the Wilderness: c. 1700-1300 B.C. (Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, Deuteronomy) The Descent into Egypt o Joseph  (the youngest brother of his family) is sold to slavery by his envious brothers  because he has most of his father’s love and affection.  Joseph then becomes the Pharaoh’s  high priest.  Famine/drought bring Joseph’s family to Egypt   end result: they become  members of Pharaoh’s patronage The Exodus (Map 2) o Annual Jewish  Passover , Passover lamb o God intervenes to divert disaster and sees for the survival of His people  The Mosaic Covenant (Ten Commandments) o Mt. Sinai = Horeb o Moses receives tablets from God in Mt. Sinai; these are stored in a special box ( ark of the  covenant ) o Equals third covenant between God and Israelites III. Entry into Canaan and the Rule of the Judges: 1200-1020 B.C. (Joshua, Judges, 1 Samuel) The Israelites establish themselves in Canaan (Map 3) o Israelites’ promised land  = land of Canaan    Joshua  = leader o 1290’s: nomadic and semi-nomadic people start moving into agricultural regions of the  Jordan valley (Kingdoms of Edom, Moab, and Ammon) The Covenant Community o “Judges” : wartime leaders under whom a group of tribes in the confederacy might unite  ( Gideon Deborah Samson ) o 12 Israelite Tribes : loose confederacy organized around common worship of  Yahweh o Covenant of Sinai renewed in Shechem The Philistines o Philistines occupied southern coast of land of Canaan (military power, structural  organization and government) o Shiloh destroyed (where ark covenant was kept) and the ark of the covenant captured
