Int. Mngmnt. International Human Resource Practice Canada Overview Canada is a country with 10 provinces and three territories. Since there are 13 different governments inside Canada’s central government they shadow much of the US policy. Canada has their provinces and territories making their own local law and customs with the central government overseeing major federal laws. Employment Law Canada has a minimum wage implemented under its employment law. Each province makes their own minimum wage similar to the United States. Alberta Canada has just increased their minimum wage as a result of pressure from its citizens. These minimum wage laws represent the lowest hourly rate. Canada, similar to the US, has overtime pay that is part of employment law. This aspect of law is also done at the province level. Alberta has law that calculates its unemployment at over 44 hours a week. If the employee is over the 44 hours a week they must be paid at least 1.5 times their normal wage (Alberta, 2003). Layoffs Layoff law in Canada is also very similar to the kinds of laws that the US has in practice. When the employee is laid off they must be given notice in writing or termination in pay according to how many years you have worked at the firm (FAQ, 2000). Belonging to a union is beneficial in Canada as in most countries where a layoff might occur. The standards mentioned above are the minimum standards required by law. Most employees that belong to a labor union have longer notification periods and better termination pay clauses. The union also gives the right to sue for unjust firing practices along with severance pay (Rights, 2007). Workplace Conditions Vacation Pay and time is a part workplace conditions in Alberta, Canada. The law states that an employee is entitled to a minimum of 2 weeks every 12 months and 3 weeks after 5 years of employment (Alberta, 2003). The employee is entitled to pay that is equal to one-month salary divided by 4.25. Maternity leave is another part of workplace conditions that are law in Alberta. If
