Travis Norrell GEEN 1100 Alternative Energy For decades, there has been an expanding international movement to find alternative forms of energy apart from traditional gasoline-powered machinery. There are myriad reasons for this. The most important being the fact that the ozone layer is depleting as a result from carbon dioxide emissions. This is causing global warming and could eventually change the climate of the planet. Other reasons for pursuing alternative energy include there being a limited amount of fossil fuels and the cost of fossil fuels compared to some other resources. Scientific developments have created an alternative solution to our overdependence on fossil fuels. In Brazil, the use of ethanol distilled from sugarcane as a form of energy has become a reality. In time, this technology will spread, allowing more vehicles to rely on an alternative form of energy. Brazil has taken this technology and run with it. In less than ten years, they have 16.8% of their vehicles over to alcohol power,

In Brazil, diesel vehicles make up only 9% of the total vehicles on the road but account for 97% of their total road fuel consumption. This is because much of Brazil runs on buses and trucks. They are currently attempting to hybridize these vehicles by making them ethanol-electric. Similarly to the sugarcane solution, this will help with the damaging effects of global warming as well as making Brazil a leader in the alternative energy industry, greatly aiding their economy. http://www.sciencedirect.com/science? _ob=ArticleURL&_udi=B6VMY-4J2TN18-1&_user=918210&_coverDate=09%2F30%2F2007&_alid=570664851&_r doc=10&_fmt=full&_orig=search&_cdi=6163&_sort=d&_docanchor= &view=c&_ct=6469&_acct=C000047944&_version=1&_urlVersion=0& _userid=918210&md5=13cb805cf755ef5e102a253e4cbe37aa#tbl3...
