Jonathan Rose James Joyce - creating the labyrinth The myth of Daedalus and Icarus is unearthed in Joyce's the portrait of an artist as a Young Man. In excavation we find that Joyce create something new out of the reality of experience in his story that is forged through the re-creation of the mythological story of Daedalus and Icarus creates a new labyrinth out of the old labyrinth. The intertextuality in portrait of an artist as a Young Man finds its source in the literary sedimentation of the old mythological story. The Daedalus Smith is central to Stephen's development throughout the story and functions as a parallel illusion to the dream sequence near the end of the book as the main character permeates himself we find more and more that he is trapped in the bowels of the labyrinth that Joyce has created to also parallel the Irish streets and walled in atmosphere that many young Irish men may have found themselves in during that time in that country in those towns in Ireland. Some examples of the parallels to the myth of Daedalus include the circular stone structure as a part of the labyrinth on page 180 of the novel. And on page 170 we have the ritual rebirth, Stephen Daedalus owns up to his own name and commits himself to the ceremony that parallels the ancient rights of the mythological story. Then the close of chapter Four, a revelatatory scene in which Stephen is becoming what Joyce is trying to create. In pages 168 through 170 the flights of Daedalus in the mythological story parallels the flight of Stephen as he approaches the ocean beach. Before his flight he sees the girl as the ancient seabird of old and she transformed into the angelic figure that Steven cannot take his eyes off until he turns to race towards the sea with cheeks aflame. On the following page, his new flight he, “sets off across the sand…holy silence of his

ecstasy…soul swooned in a new world” (Joyce 172). On pages 66 through 67 we see Stephen walking, walking, walking and often in circles. Stephen's plight inside the labyrinth is evident through Joyce’s easily comprehensible clues—as Stephen walks in circles through core doors by walls and continually feels trapped wherever he goes. The parallels to the labyrinth and the myth of Daedalus are numerous, and will be discussed in detail in the paper after the myth is re-told, Joyce’s plan is unveiled and we see a huge historical discovery. Joyce’s Re-creation and Reasoning: The article: “The labyrinth as controlling image in Joyce's a Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” by Diane Fortuna describes in detail and agrees with my conclusions that Stephen is trapped inside the labyrinth Joyce has created, up until the final page of choices at work. Fortuna shows this work as truly a mythic novel and the content and form makes
