Beowulf- 2 nd half of poem Grendels mom: kills Aescere (thane) based on mutual trust and respect, Hrahtgars companion, Beowulf elsewhere at this point Lidites- understatement Beowulf goes to the myre, Unferth offers Beowulf a sword- Hrunting He hits Grendels mom with sword, but it doesn’t work. He can’t use blades. This is paralleled with Grendel. Anachranistic- taking something modern and imposing it back on time. Beowuld and the killing of grendels mom- blade melts, takes it back to Hrathgar, cuts off grendels head and takes it back to hrathgar- 4 men needed to carry it out. Head is displayed. Hrathgar gives treasure Beowulf goes back to Hygaelac (his uncle). Gives some of the treasure to him and Beowulf offered the crown but refuses it and gives it to hyjelacs son. Turns down power. Hygaelacs son killed Beowulf becomes king. Dragon comes, supposed to protect treasure. The treasure has a curse, nobody can have it. The slave sees the
