Jeff Mylet Introduction to U.S. Politics Professor Kincaid 12/7/2006 The 2006 Pennsylvania Governor Race I am a native of the city of Wilkes-Barre, in Northeastern Pennsylvania. I was born there, and still live in the area to this day. The 2006 Pennsylvania Governor race is most likely the one to affect me personally, so, for that reason I chose this race for my research. The fact that I am on the football team, and a NFL Hall-of-Famer was the Republican candidate helped in my decision as well. The first leading candidate in this race was Ed Rendell. Rendell was the incumbent and represented the Democratic Party. His Lieutenant Governor is Catherine Baker Knoll. The next candidate, Lynn Swann, represented the Republican Party. His Lieutenant Governor is Jim Matthews. Current Governor Ed Rendell was born January 5 th , 1944 in New York City. He has lived in Pennsylvania since moving to the state when he attended the University of Pennsylvania. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1965, and then attended

law school at Villanova Law where he graduated with a J.D. in 1968. Ed Rendell served two terms as the District Attorney for the City of Philadelphia from 1978 to 1985. In 1986, Rendell ran for governor, but lost to Robert P. Casey, who went on to serve two terms as governor. The following year, he ran for mayor of Philadelphia, but lost that election as well. After that, he made another attempt at mayor, and was elected the 121 st mayor of Philadelphia, and held the office from 1992 to 2000. Rendell is a veteran of the United States Army, and served as General Chair of the Democratic National Committee during the 2000 presidential election. Governor Rendell is married to First Lady Marjorie O. Rendell, who is a Judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. The Rendells celebrated their 35 th wedding anniversary on July 10 th , 2006, and they have one son, Jesse. Running against Ed Rendell is the Republican candidate, Lynn Swann. Swann was born March 7 th , 1952 in Alcoa, Tennessee, but moved to California at the age of 2 with his parents and two brothers. He played college football at the University of Southern California, and graduated in 1974 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations from the university’s school of journalism. He was also a collegiate All-American in 1973. However, Swann 2
