For this assignment, I read the article “The Matter of Whiteness,” by Richard Dyer.
this article, I believe that the author is trying to spread his idea that these days, instead of being
considered “white,” one would simply be considered “human.”
On numerous occasions, Dyer
states that whites are non-raced, and that racial imagery does not apply to the white culture.
believes that racial imagery is only applied to cultures such as the blacks, the Hispanics, the
Asians, the Chinese, or other cultures.
Not only are people classified by their skin color or the
way they look, but also by other characteristics of their lifestyle, such as their sexual preference,
or their language or accent, or even by their gender.
If you ever listen to the way most people speak, you will pick up on something peculiar;
and it is that white people will talk about the blackness or the gayness of people they know, even
if it is said in the most sincere manner.
They will never, however, refer to the whiteness of those
friends, neighbors, family, or anyone else for that matter.
This is just one example that shows
that the racial imagery of white people is not portrayed enough.
