01/30/08 History 4 – Lecture 10 Week 4: Wednesday 2 new links: Required – Daoism and Confucianism; Dalai Lama “Divine” – “cosmos Rebirth (cause and effect of “energy”) vs. reincarnation (stable) “Compassion” – not a goal but a consequence Divine-Human Unification - Problem: human beings as they are, are not connected with that which is understood as ultimate - Purpose of religion is to bridge that gap - Judaism: God is seen as a person so that the divine is made more personal - Some other names: o Cosmic-Human Unity could be a better name for this category, but then it leaves out the personal aspect o Transcendent: beyond what we are experiencing with the five senses o Human-UR unity - Maybe we need to get over our need for personal connection because that which is ultimate is not personal - Buddhist: the problem is that you are aware of being yourself o Why do we call it suffering? Why not just call it life? o Which means that people realize that something’s missing - We wouldn’t be human if we weren’t self-conscious
