Buddhism – Discussion Questions 1. In Novak’s section on Buddhism, how is Ultimate Reality perceived? In Buddhism, Ultimate Reality is thought to be conceived when Nibbana (or Nirvana) is reached. Attaining Nirvana means that one’s mind is rid of all material cravings and is finally freed from the cycle of rebirth. It is essentially the end of all Karma formations, the true Peace, and the fading away of craving. This is achieved through practicing Yogas and continually looking inward at one’s own body, feelings, perceptions, moods and ideas to conquer the cravings and depressions of ordinary people. Life in this world as we know it is an endless cycle of rebirth and suffering: birth, death, sickness, aging, despair, and pain. Since that suffering stems from the craving for sensual desires, for being and for nonbeing, the cessation of suffering is simply the act of letting go and rejecting the same cravings. 2.
