Dawn Ruan GLBST 100B Week 6 In the article Do Muslim Women Need Saving, Lughod criticizes the general ignorance and inattentiveness of the Western hemisphere towards the Muslim world. The 9.11 attack shocked the world, bringing extensive attention to the Middle East, to the countries like Afghanistan in particular. The author claims that when she was approached/interviewed by the press, the questions she got were often generalized and naïve. The media ties to seek a universal explanation from the religion of Islam for the political occurrences such as terrorism and the plight of Muslim women. Lughod rejects this attempt by emphasizing the complicated reification of cultural difference. She argues that Muslim women behave and dress “appropriately” according to their cultural and religious beliefs. They are not forced to veil themselves by men or by Islam; in fact, there are many forms of covering, embodying different meanings in the communities in which these women are used to.
