Results and Discussion: Lab 1 The purpose of this lab was to gain a better understanding of density by determining the densities of two unknown substances, liquid #2 and solid #4. Mass of solid #4 was found using a highly calibrated balance. Volume of solid #4 was then found by placing an amount of water into a graduated cylinder, measuring initial volume, adding solid sample, then subtracting the difference in volume. Trial 1: V f -V i = 13.5 mL - 10.0 mL = 3.5 mL Mass of Solid #4 Initial Volume in graduated cylinder (V i ) Final Volume in graduated cylinder (V f ) Volume of Solid #4 (V f -V i ) Trial 1 10.059 g 10.0 mL 13.5 mL 3.5 mL Trial 2 10.059 g 10.0 mL 13.4 mL 3.4 mL Trial 3 10.059 g 14.5 mL 18.0 mL 3.5 mL Density was calculated for each trial by dividing the mass of solid #4 by the volume of solid #4 as such: g/mL 874 . 2 mL 5 . 3 g 059 . 10 = = volume mass Mass of Solid #4 Volume of Solid #4 Density ( m / v ) Trial 1 10.059 g 3.5 mL 2.874 g/mL Trial 2 10.059 g 3.4 mL 2.959 g/mL Trial 3 10.059 g 3.5 mL 2.874 g/mL The average density of the three determined densities, = + + 3 g/mL 2.874 g/mL 2.959 g/mL 2.874 2.902 g/mL

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
