In Chapter Nine of the textbook, Counseling for Seemingly Impossible Problems, Dr. Julius Brooks statedregarding the treatment of mood disorders such as major depression and bipolar disorder, “Onechallenge lies in the counselor’s ability to recognize the client’s need for medical evaluation,” (2002). Inmy experience as a counselor within a church setting, I find this to be an accurate statement regardingthe counselor’s ability; yet I also have experienced feedback from my clients over the past seven yearsthat tells me there is more to making a proper diagnosis than the counselor’s knowledge. Whileproficiency is crucial, I have found that I must also be able to explain the need for medical evaluation tomy clients in a way that is non-judgmental; find ways to alleviate their spiritual concerns about mentalhealth treatment, especially medication; and incorporate knowledge of biological and hereditarycomponents of mental health into our discussions in ways that increase knowledge and encourage myclients and their family members.
