Her daughter, Susie, who is married with three school-aged children, agrees to let her mother move in with her. Susie is concerned with balancing the demands of her career and the needs of her family, especially now that her elderly and chronically ill mother will need assistance. She is also unsure about how she feels with the reversal of roles, having to now be the primary caregiver of her mother. How can the nurse, caring for this family, assist with the changes they are about to undergo? How can both the family structural theory and the family developmental theory be applied to this scenario? How can health education enhance health promotion for this family? In health promotion and disease prevention, nurses assist families to improve their capacity to act on their own behalf (Kaakinen et al., 2010). Susie will be facing a new challenge in her life. The role of a mother, spouse, care provider for hermother and career demands. The nurse can assist Susie and her family with educational material in how to care for the elderly: home safety, medication compliance, monitor nutritional status and activities. The nurse should remind Susie that she also needs to be focused on herself. The effects of stress and lock of sleep is not only frustrating but it can also affect Susie's health negatively.Susie needs be informed that there is help available in the community such as home health, meal on wheels, ambulatory care program, telehealth and transportation services for seniors. Many of these services are covered by governmental assistance programs, foundations or at a low cost by non

profit organizations. In the family structural theory, the nurse will help identify Susie and her family member's strength and accordingly assign roles to each member so they cansuccessfully overcome this change. Developmental theory approaches families from the perspective of tasks and progression through cycles. As families enter each new developmental stage, transition occurs. Families move through new stages as a result of events (Edelman, C. 2014) In this case Susie's family is encountering the event of integrating Mrs. Jones into the family's circle, consequently Susan and each member in the family will have new tasks to employ for the wellbeing of Mrs.Jones, Susie and the structure of the whole family.
