Geology Final Review Session To find CO2 in atmosphere we take a sample and measure its composition. Go to ice cores and take a sample of trapped gas bubbles. Deeper in ice core=older. Collect samples of CO2. o Last ice age ended about 15kya (22k years for one precession cycle)(put spikes in every 20k years) o Elipticity: seasonality today is less than 11ky o High seasonality = hot summers and cold winters (lots of ice melts and little ice growth) Less ice cover on planet o When very cold can’t transport much water vapor o We measure O18/O16 in the ice core that gives us a up and down hill pattern warm climate= high ratios of O18/O16 and cold climate = low ratios Major Orogenies (pick 2) o Himalayan (40my): India and Asia o Alleghany-Appalachian (300 my): N. America and Africa o Grenville (1100my): Rodinia (N. America and something else) o Laramide ( 80-40 my): Rocky Mtns. (involved fast subduction of Faralon plate) o Taconic: collision of arc with Maine Coal deposits are remains of algae (terrestrial plant remains very rich in carbs)
