Taracena 1 Sara Taracena (Yaya) Dr. Yates COMM 1433 70 30 June 2016 Fundamentals of Speech Week 1 Text An Essential Guide to Public Speaking From the ancient times, humanity has lost its courage. According to Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, this represents the end of our society. He says that we have caught up on the love for ourselves and have forgotten what God commands us to do. As Christians, we must be courage in Christi and use speech to share the Good news of the gospel. We must do this everywhere, not only in our churches or Christian communities but also in the secular world. God explains this in the Bible as to living in the world to being of the world. I agree with Solzhenitsyn when discussing how humans are used to keeping their opinions to themselves and as a result, humanity has had to pay a high price for it. I can use the example of how other Christians are being murdered for their faith and us, Christians that are not being persecuted, are so comfortable that don't take the extra mile to help our brothers and sisters. I will try and apply this to my life to be able to help the ones around me. 1. Democratic Discourse They speak responsibility and freedom to identify with the kingdom of God. This gives humanity the freedom to collaborate and take decisions based on the common Good. All of this is done by the gift of speech and the courage to share one's opinion. This is why using the gift of communication is very important because it can persuade to one direction and it should be used well. I can apply this to my life when taking decisions that will affect others. We have the gift of speech and we must learn to use it properly. If so, we will be able to defend the truth at all cost. 2. Speaking in Society As Christians, we should always think of the common good and use the communication to express what is best for everyone. However, this can be challenging for Christians in the secular world. This takes communicative justice, to be responsible for taking others opinions a count and to respect them. We must learn how to dialog responsibly. After all, this is what a speaker expects; an audience that respectfully listens to its ideas. This gives the audience the freedom to either agree or not. Philosopher Richard says that there should be no religious speaking in public life. He calls this ¨Conversation stopper¨. He is partially right. Sometimes this can be dangerous and can stop a speech in cold. Anyone should be able to prove their point across with or without religious ideas. We can talk in church about our faith freely because everyone there

Taracena 2 understands it and approves it. However, on the outside world, it will take a lot to make the audience understand it and it can lead to a bad road. That is why it is so important to learn how to convey those points the right way. From now on, I will try to be a better audience and respect everyone’s opinion so when I speak, I can be treated like that as well. Also, I will make sure I speak with the

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
