Social Policy Decisions PaperMothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is a non-profit organization that started in the 1980’s to advocate for stricter laws against driving under the influence of alcohol and underage drinking. Mother Against Drunk Driving also provides support services for those who are victimsof driving under the influence whether it be the actual victim or the victim’s family. Before Mothers Against Drunk Driving took the initiative to bring attention to the issue of driving under the influence the punishments were very lenient with little to no jail time. However, since MADD’s creation there has been prevention programs created to warn those of the effect of driving under the influence as well as harsher penalties for those charged with the crime. This paper will discuss the creation and history of Mothers Against Drunk Driving and how it has helped develop social policies and the effects there of.On May 3rd1980 Cari Lightner was walking along a quiet road on her way to a church carnival in Fair Oaks, California when a vehicle lost control striking and killing her.
