QUESTION Define Force. What are its characteristics? Explain with suitable sketch. An electric light fixture of weight Q = 178 N is supported as shown in Figure. Determine the tensile forces S 1 and S 2 in the wires BA and BC if their angles of inclination are as shown. State and explain parallelogram law of forces with a neat sketch. A boat is moved uniformly along a canal by two horses pulling with forces P=890N and Q=1068N acting under an angle α = 60 0 (see below Figure). Determine the magnitude of the resultant pull on the boat and the angles β and γ as shown in the figure. Two forces A and B are acting at an angle θ .Their resultant ‘R’ will make an angle α with the force A, Determine the value of cos α. A circular roller of weight Q = 445 N and radius r = 152 mm hangs by a tie rod AC = 304 mm and rests against a smooth vertical wall at B , as shown in Figure. Determine the tension S in the tie rod and the force R b exerted against the wall at B . 0

Find the angle between two equal forces P, when their resultant is equal to (i) P and (ii) P/2. A ball of weight Q = 55 N rests on a right-angled trough, as shown in Fig. Determine the forces exerted on the sides of the trough at D and E if all surfaces are perfectly smooth. State the Polygon law of forces with a neat sketch. A 667.5 N man stands on the middle rung of a 222.5 N ladder , as shown in Fig. Assuming a smooth wall at B and a stop at A to prevent slipping, find the reactions at A and B Distinguish clearly between resolution of forces and composition of forces.

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
