Course Rationale Engineering Chemistry is an applied manifestation of Chemistry and its thorough knowledge in fundamental aspects, essential for all technical disciplines to understand chemical structure and other aspects of materials. The study of applied concepts of Chemistry endeavoured in this course namely; electrochemistry, corrosion, water treatment, phase rule, engineering materials like polymers, paints and nano-materials helps the student in comprehensing their engineering applications with right aptitude and ability in predicting the results under given conditions. Course Outcomes (CO): CO # CO SO BTL 1 Predict potential complications from combining various chemicals or metals in an engineering setting b,c 2 2 Discuss fundamental aspects of electrochemistry and materials science relevant to corrosion phenomena b,c 2 3 Examine water quality and select appropriate purification technique for intended problem b,c 2 4 Apply phase rule, polymers, conducting polymers and nano chemistry to engineering processes c 2 5 An ability to analyze & generate experimental skills b,c 2 COURSE OUTCOME INDICATORS (COI): CO # COI-1 COI-2 COI-3 CO-1 Apply the concept of Electrode potential and redox equilibrium to the analysis and design of Electrochemical cells .Understand the redox chemistry and its role in storage devices (batteries) that can support reliable renewable energy supply Paraphrase the role of Combustion, photochemical and Nuclear reactions in Energy supply. CO-2 Discuss the Mechanism of Corrosion of Metallic structures. Outline various ways of formation of anodes and cathodes causing corrosion of metallic structures Predict appropriate corrosion control techniques in the given environment CO-3 Generalize water quality parameters and analysis of Hardness and alkalinity. Predict operational troubles of the boiler for the given water analysis report Analyze and select appropriate water softening and desalination Process CO-4 Discuss the chemistry of polymers, Conducting polymers, Liquid crystal polymers and their Engineering Applications. Interpret the concepts, classification and application of Nano-materials Prediction of equilibrium relations & their characterizations to construct phase diagrams.
