”Character Analysis and Setting”
I have chosen to use the short story “Worn Path” written by Eudora Welty in 1941 and
renewed in 1969. The character of this story is an elderly colored woman whose name is Phoenix
Jackson. I would describe Phoenix as a flat character, because the story only identifies her
personality through only a couple of her behaviors and that is how she is seen throughout the
whole story.
Phoenix Jackson interests me mostly because she reminds me a lot about my own
grandmother. Phoenix is a determined woman and pushes herself to move forward so she can get
the medicine needed for her sick grandson. She is compassionate throughout the story and well-
focused on her surroundings. She also has the willingness to face dangers so she can provide for
her family.
The character Phoenix Jackson has an encounter with the force of nature.
