HISTORY 240 – LECTURE 11/28/07 FROM NATION-STATE TO GLOBAL COMMONWEALTH Geography/Place CA as a place All human beings live somewhere Depending where shapes destiny Island on the land Tectonic plates thrusting together Seismic volatility – ring of fire Fault lines in CA Effects on society Four geographic landscapes o desert o Long coastline o Mountains o valley Many different state opportunities Central valley – 340 miles Ports (san diego, LA, Monterey, SF (took them so long to find and discover), humbolt) What kind of culture they determined? …..Spain and Mexico o Footprint – where spain and mexico settled is where the new settlers settled Nature, technology, and science Gold rush – beginning of American CA Environmental havoc that the gold rush created Nature was an overriding metaphor – range, diversity Technology applied to nature to create economy Nature developed by environmentalists
