CTCS 190 LECTURE OUTLINE – WEEK XI – 11/6/07 PART 2: THE POSTCLASSICAL PERIOD: 1946-1962 GENRES AND STYLE Classical paradigms changed because of WWII What does culture have to do with genre? ---making culture visible to people Cause for change in genre – other leisure activities were very big in post- war culture and movies had to compete with all other art forms and media (TV, stage, novel) A. Conditions and Causes for Genre Experimentation in American Film 1. The post-war years of transition in America, 1946-1962 2. Creator and consumer sophistication a. TV becomes the mass media b. 1/6 of TV time was for showing old movies (movie makers had to make new formulas so that people are not seeing them over again when they can get the same movies on TV) i. movie makers had to do something new! 3. Technological developments (changes the formula) a. TV (new technology) b. Gave movies larger scope so they would be better than TV c. Made movies color because TVs weren’t color d. Sound
