Chemistry 2A Chemistry 2A -c W2006 c W2006 (Ch5 (Ch5 -9)56 9)56 IV. Oxidation-Reduction Reactions Definition: Oxidation process: loss of electrons Reduction process: gain electrons Reactions involving the transfer of electrons: Oxidation-Reduction ( Redox) reactions. An oxidation and its corresponding reduction process occur simultaneously Example : Reaction of hot steel wool reacts with oxygen: 4 Fe (s) + 3 O 2 2Fe 2 O 3 (s) Iron picks up mass because it becomes iron (III)oxide. Half-reactions: Oxidation (loss of e - ): 4(Fe o Fe 3+ + 3e -) Reduction (gain of e - ): 3O 2 o + 12e - 6O 2- Net reaction : 4Fe o + 3O 2 o 4Fe 3+ + 6O 2- 0+ 3 0- 2 Fe (Reducing agent) is oxidized O (oxidizing agent) is reduced Balance equation : electron loss = electron gain
