Chemistry 2A Chemistry 2A -c F2006 c F2006 (Ch4 (Ch4 -7)42: 7)42: Chemical Reactions Chemical Reactions Concentration of Aqueous Solutions Mass % One way of expressing the concentration of a solute in a solution is to report the % by mass. If we have 5.00 g of NaCl dissolved in100.0 g of water, we can calculate the % by mass . Mass % for NaCl = (5.00 g NaCl)x100/(105 g) = 4.76% Because of the convenience of measuring volumes of liquids, certain quantities of chemical are measured by determining their volume. A solution consists of one or more solutes (minor component) dissolved in a solvent (major component). Concentrations of solutions are expressed in moles of a solute in a certain volume of solution. Molarity (M) ( mol of solute/L of solution) The # of moles of solute per liter of solution
