Chemistry 2A Chemistry 2A -c F2006 c F2006 (Ch10 (Ch10 -1)218 1)218 Chemical Bonding I: Basic Concepts Chemical Bonding I: Basic Concepts I. Lewis Theory ( Octet Rule ) 1. Valence (outmost) electrons play a fundamental role in chemical bonding. 2. Ionic bonds: electrons are transfer from one atom to another to form ionic bonds. Positive and negative ions attract each other by electrostatic forces. 3. Covalent bonds: one or more pairs of electrons are shared between atoms to form covalent bonds. 4. Electrons are shared or transferred such that reach atom acquires an stable electron configuration, which is usually a noble gas configuration with 8 electrons in the outer-shell.
