04/12/06 Theatre The Grapes of Wrath The purpose of the grapes of wrath play is to convey Cecilia Pang’s vision of the John Steinbeck’s book in a manner that causes the audience to identify with the struggles that the Joad family went through during their move to California. The actors are the director’s voice and they are trying to put into words and actions what the director is trying to convey to the audience about the context of the play. The event that had occurred before the beginning of the play, Tom having gone to jail in Oklahoma for murder, was important to understanding Tom’s actions through out the play and it laid a base of reason for his characters beliefs. One important event in Act one occurs when Tom gets out of jail. He is on his way home and he has a chance occurrence with his old pastor Jim Casey. This is the catalyst of the play and it starts the action. Without this meeting of these two characters the events in the later part of the play would not represent the friendships and sacrifices that were conveyed at the end of the play. A second major event in Act 1 is the decision by tom to travel with his family to California in search of work. Obviously without his decision to travel to California his family would not have been as strong and together as they were. However this major event’s aura is diminished by the death of Tom’s grandpa
