Chemical signals and signaling molecules Chemical signals – molecules secreted from one cell and received by another (target cell) that cause a response in the target Several broad classes of signaling molecules Neurotransmitters – only in the synaptic cleft between neurons Paracrine signals (local signaling molecules) – targets are cells nearby Pheromones – targets are in another individual (usually of the same species) Hormones – regulatory chemical signals that are secreted into the circulatory system to access a target cell(s) and elicit a response
