Surname 2 Female Feminism was born out of the oppression women faced in the patriarchal culture of the nineteenth century. Feminist icon Charlotte Perkins Gilman was a well-known figure in her day. A champion of women's rights, Gilman devoted her life to social reform and believed that all women should be treated equally throughout the "Victorian Age." As a result, Charlotte Gilman Herland's 1915 novel is still considered one of the first female utopian novels. Sherwood Anderson Gilman credited women's liberation movements of the 1970s with helping to make Herland a best-seller due to its all-female utopian society. Second-wave Feminism became aware of Gilman's work in the late 1970s, and Forerunner was serialized as a result. Feminist activism began with demonstrations at Seneca Falls and the fight for women's suffrage in the U.S. Senate.
