LESSON 4: Concept of nursingDefinitions Of Nursing“The act of utilizing the environmentof the patient to assist him in hisrecovery”(Nightingale,1860/1969)“The unique function of the nurse isto assist the individual, sick or well,in the performance of these activitiescontributing to heath or its recovery(or to peaceful death) that he wouldperform unaided if he had thenecessary strength, will, orknowledge, and to do this in such away as to help him gainindependence as rapidly as possible”(Henderson, 1966)Certain themes are common tomany of these definitions:1.Nursing is caring2.Nursing is an art3.Nursing is a science4.Nursing is client centered5.Nursing is holistic6.Nursing is adaptive7.Nursing is concerned with healthpromotion, health maintenance,and health restoration8.Nursing is a helping profession“Direct, goal oriented, andcommunity during health andillness”(ANA, 1973)Nursing is the diagnosis andtreatment of human responses toactual or potential health problems”(ANA, 1980)“Nursing is the protection,promotion, and optimization ofhealth and abilities, preventions ofillness and injury, alleviation ofsuffering through diagnosis andtreatment of human response, andadvocacy in the care of theindividuals, families, communities,and populations”(ANA, 2015)Recipients of NursingThe recipients of nursing aresometimes called consumers,sometimes patients, andsometimes clients.Consumer- is an individual, agroup of people, or a community,that uses a service or commodity.Patient- is a person who iswaiting for or undergoing medicaltreatment and care. Patientcomes from a Latin word meaning“to suffer” or “to bear”.Client- is a person who engagesthe advice or services of anotherwho is qualified to provide theirservice. The term client presentsthe receivers of health care ascollaborations in the care, that is,as people who are alsoresponsible for their own health.Thus, the health status of a clientis the responsibility of theindividual in collaboration withhealth professionals.Scope of Nursing1.Individuals- is a unique being whois different from every other humanbeing, with a different combinationof genetics, life experiences, andenvironmental interactions.2.Families- is a basic unit of society. Itconsist of those individuals, male orfemale, youth or adult, legally or notlegally related, genetically or notgenetically related, who are
considered by others to representtheir significant people.3.Communities- is a collection ofpeople who share some attribute oftheir lives and interact with other insome way.Nursing practiceinvolves four areas:promoting health and wellness,preventing illness, restoringhealth, and caring for the dying.PROMOTING HEALTH ANDWELLNESSWhen health is defined broadly asactualization of human potential, ithas been calledwellness (Pender,Murdaugh, Parsons, 2011).
