1 Breaking down the Work CPMGT/300-Project Management 14 December 2015 Instructor:
2 Breaking down the Work (Kerzner 2013) stated that successful project management, whether in response to an in-house Project or a customer request must utilize effective planning techniques. During the previous three weeks we choose a project to developed through the class. The proposal was the first individual assignment in a series with the purpose of building a complete project plan deliverables: Project Proposal Project Charter Project Requirements Project Work Breakdown Structure, Schedule, and Cost Estimates Previous documents provided a project charter for the Hidden Haven community for the renovation and replacement of the existing security fence and the lighting system. The main objective is to replace the existing fence with a more secure and reliable fence surrounding the residential area. Project requirements determine the mission, views, and intentions; creating policies and procedures, regular in items such as projects and programs, that are devised to obtain these goals, and then to designate resources to carry out the policies and procedures, projects, and goals. The charter describes in detail the objectives and background and provides the strategy of the complete project and the responsibilities of the sponsor, project manager, stakeholders, homeowners association committee and the project team members The importance of the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) WBS is the first step in the planning process that spotlight the financial value, services, and data to produce the final result of the project (Kerzner 2013). The experts say that a well-organized WBS will assist the stakeholders in the effective distribution of assets, organize, acquisitions, funds, quality assurance and service oriented administration. Because of this, the WBS helps the project manager understand the project well. The WBS makes the execution of the project easier. The main purpose of the WBS about to the Hidden Haven Fence renovation project is to
3 reduce complicated activities to a collection of tasks. The WBS is important for the project manager because he/she can oversee the tasks more effectively than the complex activities. Tasks must be measurable and independent, with clearly defined limits. All the project work included in one of the tasks, and the tasks must not include any non-project work. Once you have established the project WBS, changing it is a no-no. We can make changes, but if it is automated, you will have to redo the entire plan, schedules, and resources. Never, ever change the WBS without customer concurrence. Once finished, a project must fulfill the stakeholder needs it was designed to address. We divide the WBS into tasks with time constraints to completion of
