Character Analysis Andrew Sobler The name of the story I will be doing this paper on is “The Things They Carried”, and it is written by Tim O’Brien. The character in the story I will be analyzing is Lieutenant Jimmy Cross. The reason I think Jimmy is the way he is throughout the story is because he is constantly worried about this girl Martha, a junior at a college in New Jersey. He has like a “hating” kind of love for her, and ponders whether she actually truly loves him or not, and whether or not she is a virgin. One aspect of Jimmy Cross’s personality is that he always seems to worry too much about everything. For example, when it comes to Martha, he worries too much about little things about her. Even though she signs her letters to him “Love”, he always thinks that love is just a polite way of signing a letter, rather than it being literal love. Another thing he keeps worrying about is whether or not Martha is a virgin. Just the very detailed way in which he describes her “virgin” legs is something to make everyone’s eyes bubble. Then there’s words mentioned about how Martha’s legs looked like they
