A system of communication in which messages were passes down from slave to slave through without having the whites know. The same verse of songs would be repeated over and over again until the message made its way down the chain. 2. Voodoo in the 19 th century South was a religious meeting or the time and plan of an escape route to ‘Canaan’. 3. Voodoo turned matriarchal in the United States because it was easier for women to have power over men, and therefore became important and spiritual leaders. 4. Both races of women participated in the ceremonies by attending the voodoos. They both felt the manipulation of the ‘divide and conquer’ strategy that was set up by the southern white men. The Twenties, The Blues Women 1. “A freer solo expression” was more possible after the Emancipation. Ideas, concepts and feelings of hope, joy, pain, hard times, abandonment, individual isolation, suffering, hope, wisdom and dreams were all incorporated into the blues. 2.TOBA – Theaters Owner’s Booking Association 3. Rural blues and mixing it with vaudeville / minstrel shows. 4. “A device for making the best of a bad situation” means that although times were hard and they felt as if no one would care, singing about it made it better, because this way people were going to listen, even if they didn’t want to. Feelings of hope, pain, isolation etc. were going to be expressed and make the singer feel better about getting a situation out in the open. 5. The relationship between the blues and power is that for the moments that they felt that everything was spiraling out of control, there was this one moment in time where they could sing out it, listen to their song and put them in control; the power to control their
