Theology Reflection 4.11.2008 Poetry and Theology The speaker, Kevin Hart, has been all over the world and at one point even taught at Villanova University. His studies of Theology and Poetry were impressive, especially for a field that is not extensively studied. His presentation began with four main reasons why we should be dubious about religious poetry according to major authors. After he went through and explained each reason, he went on to point out the big holes of each argument in a very intellectual way. For instance, T. S. Elliot said religious poetry was “at best minor poetry” because people write about how they want to feel rather than how they feel. The funny thing about this is that T. S. Elliot’s poetry was religious and he is known as a great religious poet. The other reasons why religious poetry were: When you are engaged in prayer, you are in a higher state than poetry so there is not much room for novelty and intervention, poetry distracts us from ethics, and poetry distracts us from
