Travis McMaine 11/5/07 Drawer U5H Aman Preet Benzoin Condensation Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to synthesize Benzoin from Benzaldehyde and the cyanide ion. The Benzoin created in this lab will be used for the next lab in the creation of benzil. Theory: In this reaction, Benzaldehyde is used as both a nucleophile and an electrophile. The determining factor is the electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups. To begin the reaction, Benzaldehyde, an aromatic aldehyde, is mixed with a catalytic cyanide ion. The nucleophilic cyanide ion is able to attack the electrophilic carbon in the carbonyl group of the Benzaldehyde. The α-H bond is weakened since this creates the conjugate base of cyanohydrin and the CN- group is electron-withdrawing. The movement of this hydrogen to the oxygen creates the intermediate carbanion. This is stabilized by the electron-withdrawing nature of the CN- group. The carbanion is now nucleophilic so it attacks the electrophilic carbonyl carbon on another molecule of Benzaldehyde.
