October 30, 2007 Intro. to Psych Exam study session tonight at 5:30 in HUB Cafe Thinking/Cognition -refers to a process that involves knowing, understanding, remembering, communicating -heuristics -rules of thumb that allow us to make judgments/solve problems efficiently -speedier, but more error-prone than algorithms -representative/availability heuristics -rep: judging the likelihood of things/objects in terms of how well they seem to represent/match a particular prototype -if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it must be a duck -availability heuristics -available information is more likely -whatever increases the ease of retrieving info increases its perceived availability -availability is affected by other factors other than frequency/prob -familiarity -recency -imagining -distinctiveness -media coverage -conjunction fallacy -conjunction – co-occurrence of 2 events cannot be more likely than probability of either event alone -framing -how an issue is framed can significantly affect decisions and judgments -belief perseverance -our tendency to cling to our beliefs in the face of contradictory evidence is called belief perseverance -beliefs are treasured possessions
