The University of the West Indies Open CampusZonelle BaptisteBSc Management StudiesSOCI1002: Introduction to Sociology10thNovember, 2020a)What socio-economic challenges face Hamilton and his family in the circumstances of the casepresented?
Socio-economic problems are factors that have a negative effect on the economic activity ofindividuals, including lack of education, cultural and religious inequality, overpopulation, unemployment, and corruption. Poverty is also a variable that defines one’s socio-economicstatus, for example, the role of a person or a group within a hierarchical social system thatdepends on a variety of variables, including occupation, education, wages, wealth, and place ofresidence. In today’s economy, your employment will dictate your income, your income leveloften correlate with your level of education and your level of education helps to dictate youremployment.(Tarver, 2020)Upon reading this case study, I realized Hamilton has an extended family these family areoftentimesrelativesoutside of the immediate circle of his spouse or children.Anexampleofanextended familyis grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins living in the samehousehold. Hamilton and his family live in an agricultural community. Which are greatdomesticity. In the scenario presented, situations that occurred has evidently proven thatHamilton and his family facedoccupational, income and educational challenges. Based on thecase study, it indicates that Helen’s contract was cut short because of the pandemic and nowhinders the source of income for her family. Also, it highlights “Carolyn and Christophe are expected to participate in online classes by theirrespective schools using their mobile phones and internet service that is not always reliable.”How is the family going to provide an internet service without a great source of income? Note,Helen lost her job and the family is being affected by a lack of emolument. Many times, familydissatisfaction stems into the life of their children and tampers/distract them from excelling intheir school work, children from low-income families oftentimes don’t have the same resourcesavailable to them as children from families with middle or high incomes, this too proves that theirEducation would also be affected knowing that their school work requires certain type of materialthat they cannot afford.Being realistic, a good-paying job is hard to find without being well-educated. Jobs hasrepeatedly shown that employers should meet the requirement list, factors such as experience, education, and skill set, all of which are important as they are geared towards improving thecompany’s level of productivity.COVID-19 is hitting a time when disparities and socialtensions in countries are high and many people and societies are still lagging behinddespite the increase in average living standards over the last ten year or so.
