Philosophy 262g lecture Buddhism Buddhist Basics: The Middle Way 4 Noble Truths 5 Aggregates Sansara Dependent Origination Anatman 4 Noble Truths All life is suffering Suffering originates from cravings Suffering can be prevented by avoiding cravings or by the following the Eightfold Path. 5 aggregates All reality consists of a vast array of elements that come into being and pass away. The 5 Kandhas/Aggregates: form, reaction formations (sankhara), sensation (vedana), perception (sanna), consciousness (vinnana) Sansara Buddhas thought that one’s soul remains the same as one gets reincarnated and moves from one body to another. But this contradicts their idea since the soul would then have to be everlasting and not transitory. But then what is reincarnation? What is being passed on from one lifetime to another? Idea of replacement: during reincarnation, the one’s consciousness in a certain lifetime gives rise to or causes another consciousness in the next lifetime.
