(regarding the effects of drugs) Tolerance- a decrease in drug effect with repeated administration. Sensitization- (opposite of tolerance) an increase in drug effect with repeated administration. 2. What may be involved in the neuroadaptations of the brain as a result of drug addiction? Drug abuse can cause persistent neuroadaptations in brain regions involved in the process of reward. These adaptations may render these regions hypersensitive. 3. What is the common mechanism of almost all drugs of abuse? What drugs may have a direct effect using this common mechanism? What drugs may have an indirect effect? Dopamine and its regulating neural systems. Direct effect: psychostimulants (i.e. amphetamine, cocaine), Indirect effect: Nicotine, Morphine/heroin, alcohol, barbiturates. 4. Besides drugs of abuse, what other behaviors may use the “common mechanism” described in question 3? (Hint: there are several other behaviors, including one in which fMRI was used to observe this “common mechanism” in the brain.) Sexual excitement, gambling, video games, fMRI showed increased or decreased activity when viewing attractive members of the opposite and same sex. 5.
